Laugh For Sight to be featured on NBC’s Today in New York!

August 28, 2010

We are excited to announce that Laugh For Sight will be featured on NBC’s Today in New York on September 18th or 19th. I am not sure if this segment will air nationally or just locally to NYC, but I will post an on line link once we have it. The segment will be about the history of Laugh For Sight, and our national expansion. Nash and I filmed a set Wednesday night at Gotham Comedy Club as part of the segment. We also had an added bonus as Lorraine, Nash’s puppy raiser and Betsy also a puppy raiser who puppy sat Nash came to the city for the show, and we got to catch up afterwards. I told them to see me after the show, as I needed to be in the zone for the taping. When we were on stage, I could tell exactly where they were sitting even though I can’t see anyone in the crowd, as Nash was looking in their direction. I told him there was a surprise in store for him, and we was exceptionally behaved on stage. Normally, I don’t mind him moving around and doing something that I don’t expect, as it allows me to ad lib, but for the taping, I really had to stick to my material. After the show, we went out and grabbed a drink and got caught up. Nash was so happy to see Lorraine and Betsy. They also got an added bonus as James Gandolfini was filming a HBO movie, Cinema Verite to air in 2012 right in front of Gotham Comedy Club. Damn Gandolfini prevented me from going outside during the show to do my usual pacing. I’ll have to have some words with Tony Soprano about that. Maybe we will have to have a sit down!

Laugh For Sight also got some great breaking news on Friday! National Geographic Channel’s “Dog Whisperer” star Cesar Millan’s charitable organization, the Millan Foundation has donated some of Cesar’s most popular training tools for our silent auction. I only have one thing to say about that… “Tsch!”

The silent auction for Laugh For Sight 5 is shaping up to be tremendous, and this year’s NYC benefit should be our biggest and most successful one yet. Get ready to get your laugh on as Laugh For Sight 5 is three weeks from Monday!

If I Don’t Take Your Call Now You Know Why!

August 23, 2010

It’s raining and in the high 60’s in NYC and Nash and I are loving it! Hey, its been an absolutely brutal summer, and if you were wearing a fur coat all summer in this heat, you would be loving this change of weather to.  Nash seems to have had a big smile on his face all day, and since I had the window opened, he was lying so the air from outside would hit him. I just hopes this weather lasts even with the rain, as nobody ever said to me if you can’t take the heat than get out of NYC this summer. It’s a shame because we have done so much traveling this year, except for the summer, so we were stuck here. It has been so hot that I am surprised neither Nash or I burst into flames.

I know, enough about the weather, it has been hot everywhere.  This Wednesday night, Nash and I will be performing at Gotham Comedy Club and it will be filmed as part of a segment that will air in September on NBC’s Today in New York. The show at Gotham is at 9pm, and the segment which I will blog about as it gete about Nash and my stand up comedy, Visionzone, and the national expansion of Laugh For Sight, and if you haven’t noticed, Laugh For Sight 5 at Gotham is a month from today, 9/20/10!

Since my vision has gotten a lot worst, I have been forced to answer the home phone not knowing who is calling as I cannot read the caller ID. Well, today, I finally broke down, and bought a talking caller ID. YES! Now I can get back to screening my calls. Free at last, free at last! I’m interested to see how this thing works, as they told me that it speaks the calls out loud even when you are on the other line. Isn’t technology great.

We the Blind Need A Stronger Lobby, Or A Lobby!

August 10, 2010

Now I am not calling for a march on Washington, but you would think when one googles Groups That Lobby For the Blind, you would get at least one worthwhile search result. The closest hits in relevance to my search was “Group Turns Blind Eye” which I used my powers of deduction to realize that it had nothing to do with what I was looking for. The other closest result had something to did with a lobby against silent hybrid cars. Now, I am sure that there are some worth while groups out there doing some lobbying to help make blind and visually impaired peoples lives better, but pardon the pun, I don’t see it anywhere. What got me going on this search for a blind lobby group? I read earlier in the week that GLAD has actually put so much pressure on CBS that CBS is adding three gay character’s to some of their prime time shows. Made me think, hey it would be nice to see more blind character’s on tv. I know I touched on this topic about a week ago, but it got me thinking, it is amazing how powerful GLAD is, and blindness which is supposedly the greatest fear in the world, more than Aids and Cancer doesn’t have a strong lobby. You would think someone would pick up on this. For example, several years ago, the Supreme Court rules that U.S. Treasury must make bills more accessible to the blind, of course, I went to research this and learned that the U.S. Treasury doesn’t have to implement this until the next time they reissue bills. Great, how often does that happen? You would think if you had a lobby group hitting them up and putting pressure on them to act, this might actually happen in my lifetime. I can rant and rave about more issues, but that will get me nowhere as I have no one to take these issues to a higher authority. And don’t even get me started on what a disappointment Governor Patterson in NY has been to the people, and especially the blind people. For those of you who do not know, he is blind, and hasn’t done much to help the blind community.

Now, on a more positive note, your Nashdate. Nash had his yearly vet checkup, and he is completely healthy. Funny thing, as the vet takes him into this back room, and does a bunch of tests and stuff, and they told me that Nash wanted to play every time they tried to do something. He does have the friendliest most loving personality. His ears got a clean bill of health which is a first, as he always had ear infections, but I guess the allergy meds are working, and he will continue to take them. Thank God the Animal Medical Centrer provides free health care and free meds for guide dogs, or this could get expensive. His weight is fantastic as he is 67.5 pounds which is right where he should be, and was a big concern of mine a year ago, as he was like 78 pounds. He can now get an extra quarter cup of food a day. Which was my next question ads soon as I heard his weight was good, as he inhales his food at every meal, licks every last drop of the bowl, then flings the bowl around the kitchen making sure he gets every last drop. If you have not seen or heard Nash eat, it is quite the experience.

On the bus ride to the AMC everyone kept commenting how good looking Nash is, and kept asking what’s “HER” name? I guess when you are as good looking as Nash, people assume you are a woman. On the way back, we got on the bus and the driver said, “there’s another guide dog in the first seat.” Ends up it was a grad from Guiding Eyes and the February class, one of the classes that I was supposed to be in, but had to postpone. We compared a few notes on the ride, and he is very happy with his second dog from Guiding Eyes. His dog seemed to just lay there for the whole bus ride while Nash was sitting up checking out all the people, and looking out the windows. Like I said, I guess it is in the personality, as Nash is a social butterfly.

Please Help Guiding Eyes For the Blind’s Heeling Autism Win $250,000 from Pepsi

August 7, 2010

Unfortunately, Laugh For Sight is a small foundation, and we don’t have the backing yet to compete with the big boys, but Guiding Eyes For the Blind who we raise money for, and where I got the great Nash is in competition to win $250,000 for their heeling autism program. Please take your time to click on this link to vote for Guiding Eyes For the Blind, and help the kids. You can vote every day through the month of August.

In fact, the trainer who trained Nash at Guiding Eyes is now working with the Heeling Autism program. I guess after training Nash and me, Susan need an easier challenge. HA. Guiding Eyes is currently in 11th place in the voting, and I believe the top two vote getters receive funds, so they are in striking distance. Unfortunately the site is not the most visually impaired friendly, so you can also text in your vote daily by sending  text 101731 to 73774.

Nash has gotten into a bad habit. Waking Me Up. Since Summer started Nash has gone back to sleeping in his own bed as it is way to hot for the two of us to be in the same bed, which was very nice of him. I do think he wants to know how come he doesn’t get to sleep in the big bed, as he does get into my bed while I am still up watching tv, then when I come over to go to sleep, he shakes himself awake, stares at me as if to say what are you doing, then jumps down into his bed, the doggie bed. Well, my sleep pattern has been way off, which is ok, as I am making a lot of calls out West for Laugh For Sight, so waking up later and working to ten at night has been ok, but Nash does not seem to like me sleeping in. Certain mornings, he will shake himself awake, start headbutting my bed, then jumps into my bed, and starts nudging me awake. Now if it is after ten, I don’t mind this, as I know he is hungary and wants to go outside, but some morning he does it at seven or eight, and since some nights I dont go to bed until three or four, this is annoying. I guess Nash figures, if he is awake, I should be awake. What Nash does not realize, is after he eats and goes out for walk, he goes back to bed, and in the big bed, I go the computer to work. He’s lucky he is so cute, as he can get away with anything.
